Bringing a little bit of Britain to Lake Erie, Gray House Pieshails from the Lakewood suburb of Cleveland, OH. This small company makes all their pies by hand. They source ingredients such as milk, free-range eggs, and even their flour locally for the freshest product. They do not use preservatives or hydrogenated oils. We carry their pub pies frozen, but if you’re in Cleveland, be sure to visit their bakery in Westlake to check out all their delicious fruit pies and more!
Moo-ving and Grooving Farm Tours
At Edinboro Market we literally know where your food comes from!
Since our last newsletter we’ve visited Clarion River Organics, Clarion Farms and Cherry Hill Ecological Farm to see how things were shaping up so far this Spring.
Clarion Farms and Cherry Hill both sell their beef through the Market, so it was great to see how they manage their animals as well as all the beautiful pasture they have to graze and roam! (See photos below). Although this seems like the obvious place for cows, the reality is that most cattle raised through industrial agriculture (“factory-farmed”) do not live in conditions like these. They are often raised in “feed lots” where they share a small pen with several other cattle for up to 6 months of their life. On average, a feedlot pen is about 200-500 square feet and houses 60-150 cattle. That’s about 3 to 4 square feet per animal, with little to no pasture for the animals to graze on. Instead they are fed corn and grain which can change the flavor and tenderness of the meat. We are grateful to our local livestock producers for ensuring their animals are treated with the utmost care and respect during their short but important lifespans. Thank you to John-Scott Port (Clarion Farm) and Gretchen Oat and Will McGee (Cherry Hill) for the touring opportunities and their hard work!
